Job Summary

The Commercial Underwriter I is responsible for underwriting, quoting and selling small business risks through agency partners, and in the maintenance and upkeep of program rating data, forms, etc., working with system vendors as needed. The position also plays an active role in developing new products, pricing, and coverages, and is involved in monitoring and providing updated information and content for our web presence. The ideal qualified candidate will have advanced underwriting skills and be a sales-orientated insurance professional who thrives in a fast-paced, high energy business environment. Key success factors include: account pre-qualification, risk analysis, information validation, classification, pricing adequacy, thought process documentation, collaboration, negotiation, and making the sale. This role may include mentoring and coaching less experienced underwriters on more complex accounts, referral underwriting, and becoming the subject matter expert on emerging issues and complex classes/coverages.

Essential Functions

  • Solicit, underwrite and price new and renewal small commercial property and casualty business
  • Selects new business and evaluates renewal accounts in accordance with company underwriting philosophy, established authority parameters, as well as written/verbal procedures and guidelines
  • Travels to agencies providing field underwriting and quoting as needed (Up to 10% Travel)
  • Reviews claims activity, loss control surveys, and inspection reports for existing policies, handling as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in developing programs, coverages, rates, forms, etc., working with system vendors as needed
  • Assists in monitoring and developing program information and content for web presence, working with vendors as needed
  • Supports marketing activities to agents and actively participates in the agency management process.
  • Demonstrates a professional, courteous attitude with agents. Responds quickly and ethically to all requests/issues. Delivers on promises and promises only what can be delivered
  • Provides accurate and thorough education to agents about the company’s risk selection philosophy and pricing guidelines
  • Monitors performance criteria, including premium and unit count goals, mix of business, written-to-quoted ratio, and declination ratio of assigned agencies and territory
  • Achieves company growth objectives by recognizing sales opportunities, soliciting desirable business, and diligent follow-up on quoted business
  • Works with other departments as necessary to resolve policy issues
  • Determines the appropriate course of action for policy changes, delegating to assistant underwriters and/or processing assistants for handling
  • Provides mentoring and training to the underwriting team
  • Research new products and coverage forms
  • Other tasks and projects as may be assigned

Qualifications

  • Florida 2-20 General Lines Insurance License required
  • Professional Insurance Designations such as CPCU, CIC, AAI, desired
  • Min. 3 years of insurance company underwriting experience in property and casualty insurance.
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of commercial lines products and the underwriting process and analytics involved
  • Strong familiarity with Florida Insurance regulations/requirements
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Advanced computer skills and strong systems knowledge

Working conditions

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
